Startup Sphere Weekly #37

A self-mastery platform for men making 150,000/year. PLUS: A Chrome extension selling for $250,000.

Hey it’s Vlad,

welcome back to Startup Sphere, a 5-minute weekly digest about online businesses selling for life-changing amounts of money.

Last week I did an interview with Bryn about how he sold his (second) company, Race Day Prints.

I got a lot of good feedback on the interview-style newsletter, so I will definitely be looking for more founders and investors to interview.

If you’ve sold or bought a business, reply to this email and we can do a quick interview and get you featured in the newsletter.

Now, let’s get into this week’s business listings ⤵️

Weekly Rundown

iOS app to track TV shows

Asking Price: $130,000
TTM Revenue: $31,000
TTM Profit: $26,000

Some of the best business ideas are born out of solving small, everyday problems. This is a good example of that.

The business for sale is an iOS app that lets users track their favorite TV shows. This includes allowing users to keep a record of the episodes they’ve watched and see a schedule of episodes that are coming up.

The app has a 4.5-star rating and has been on the iOS App Store for 15 years, so it has definitely stood the test of time. The app also likely has strong App Store Optimization (ASO), so it would show up as a top option in organic user searches.

My initial thought would be to expand the features offered by this app and tap into a fanbase of show and movies watchers. I think offering more features around TV shows and movies similar to Letterboxd would increase the monetization opportunities and appeal to a wider audience.

Competitors include BetaSeries and JustWatch.

SaaS to help men achieve self-mastery

Asking Price: $225,000
TTM Revenue: $150,000
TTM Profit: $50,000

This is definitely a niche I’ve seen people talk about, specifically on Reddit. So it’s interesting to see that businesses are actually getting built in this space.

The company for sale is REMOJO - a SaaS that helps men achieve “self-mastery“. In simpler terms, this company helps men quit their porn addiction. They also categorize themselves under the umbrella of self-improvement, relationship improvement, etc.

This is definitely an interesting niche and seems like a problem a lot of men struggle with. This company is a great reminder that the best way to build a business is by directly addressing a problem people have.

I am not sure about the effectiveness or methods they use, but there do seem to be a lot of positive testimonials and features in publications like Forbes and TechCrunch.

The website has 2 pricing plans: $15/month for the basic and $200/month for the version with one-on-one coaching.

This is definitely an interesting company. The one drawback is that it is operationally intensive, so the profit margins are much smaller compared to a traditional SaaS.

Productivity Chrome extension

Asking Price: $250,000
TTM Revenue: $51,000
TTM Profit: $47,000

This business is an interesting example of an all-in-one solution that works well. The company for sale is Manganum - a productivity Chrome extension with 14 different apps.

Often times you hear advice to avoid going too broad when starting a business and to niche down to find your target audience. This business seems like a great counter-point to that - offering 14 different apps in a single extension.

Something else that’s interesting is that this company doesn’t have any competitors in the space. It doesn’t seem like there are any other similar all-in-one productivity Chrome extensions. In my opinion, this isn’t a great sign, since it means there is no one to model your business off of to learn how to grow it further.

The business has had steady ARR growth, but the owner is looking to sell and start another venture. This is a good opportunity for someone with a strong marketing background to come in and grow this business.
