Startup Sphere Weekly #44

Making $36,000/year with a travel newsletter. Also, a Slack plugin selling for $400,000.

Hey it’s Vlad,

welcome back to Startup Sphere, a 5-minute weekly digest about online businesses selling for life-changing amounts of money.

Last week I officially launched VentureHub, a database of over 50,000 business ideas that people are already paying for. If you’re looking for your next business venture, you can find it here: getventurehub.com.

Now, let’s get into this week’s businesses for sale ⤵️

Weekly Rundown

Travel newsletter for discounted flights

Asking Price: $60,000
TTM Revenue: $36,000
TTM Profit: $28,000

The business for sale is a newsletter focused on providing readers with alerts on cheap flights (specifically in Asia-Pacific).

I think this is a super interesting problem to solve, especially with more young people wanting to travel and the price of flights constantly fluctuating in price.

The newsletter is relatively cheap to run and makes about $3,000/month with 80,000 subscribers.

This feels like a great opportunity to work with a travel influencer and drive people to sign up for the newsletter.

Something to note is that the sale does not include the main domain (airtraveler.club).

App for airport staff to manage schedules

Asking Price: $117,000
TTM Revenue: $47,000
TTM Profit: $20,000

This business is in a super niche space, which makes me love the idea even more.

The company for sale is an app that helps airport staff manage their schedules more easily. It is effectively a calendar that members of the team can use to coordinate shifts and time blocks.

My main interest in this business is how it carved itself a spot in such a specific niche. I do wonder if this concept can be slightly tweaked and transferred to other niches as well, like hotels or restaurants.

One potential drawback is that the platform is primarily used in Spain, so it requires knowing Spanish to grow and expand the company.

The marketing channel here is likely just cold outreach to businesses, selling them on the potential efficiency improvements that this software would offer.

Slack plugins that increase productivity

Asking Price: $403,000
TTM Revenue: $208,000
TTM Profit: $142,000

I am generally a fan of businesses built on top of existing platforms. This lets you avoid building completely from scratch and gives you the ability to narrow in on where your potential customers spend most of their time.

The business for sale is a portfolio of Slack plugins. One of the plugins is a message scheduler, while the other is a form management tool.

I think Slack integrations are a great business model. They benefit from selling to B2B customers, while also taking advantage of a constantly growing platform.

My main concern is getting pushed out by Slack themselves if they decide to build out similar features. Many have seen this happen with Shopify and I don’t think it’s an unlikely scenario. Of course, as a smaller company you can ship and improve much faster, so you would just have to constantly be innovating.
